Ask Aaron: Gay Judo Problem Page
'How Old Is Too Old To Pick Up Judo?'

I have admired judo from afar, but now I'm thinking of signing up for classes.

It looks like a good way to get exercise and help stay in shape.

Plus, I think that yoko-shiho-gatame is homoerotic to the max; I'm dying for some guy to put me in that hold!

However, I just turned 36 years old. Am I too old?

How old is too old to pick up judo?

Aaron's Answer to Your Problem: You're Never Too Old to Practice Judo—Up to a Point!

Good news, mate: You're never too old to practie judo. A certain Dr. Schutte of the Netherlands began his illustrious judo career at age 50, and remained an active black belt well into his 70s.

What's more, he was particularly adept at groundworkyoko-shiho-gatame included.

Add to this the words of judo legend Kyuzo Mifune, writing in the Japan Times and Mail on December 11, 1933:

'One can never be too young or too old to start learning judo. It may as well be learned at the elementary school age as at the declining age.

'It was in his 56th year that Mr. Stewart, the Mining King, commenced to learn judo upon his visit to our shores. He soon attained to the first grade. Mr. Katsutakei Shida, Director of the Mitsui Interest in Otaru, Hokkaido, started Judo when he was near 50 years of age.

'There are many other foreigners and Japanese who mastered judo after starting its study at their comparatively advanced age. It is a gross mistake to think, as some people do, as if judo were a very dangerous sort of exercise. Judo is an art that is by no means to court, but on the contrary to avoid, hurt and danger. If anyone ever gets hurt in any way from judo practice, it is only because of the wrong manner in which the art is learned…'

My final piece of proof (as if it were needed) comes in the form of the following observation: The founder of judo, Jigoro Kano, was still improving his skills at the ripe old age of 78. That's over three quarters of a century! Rest assured, then, that there's nothing to stop you going full throttle in the pursuit of this incredible sportso get set for many years of intensive, full-contact groundwork.

And, if you're lucky, some pretty amazing judo sexcapades.

A word of warning, however: there are some readers out there who really are too old for osaekomi, too knackered for newaza. To help determine if you're one of them, Tom Castino has provided me with this handy checklist. And here it is…
